Modern cinema

Modern cinema is the cinematographic era that begins in the 70s and ends in the 80s with the introduction of postmodern cinema. Unlike classical cinema, modern cinema seeks to separate itself from films with a plot and a clear and constant message.

Modern cinema begins after the decline of the Hollywood studio system and the end of the Hays code in the late 60s. Because of this, during the 70s the filmmakers began to include sexually explicit content and very graphic scenes of violence in their films. We can appreciate the characteristics of modern cinema in the black film histories of the 40s and 50s in which the use of unexpected endings is observed, characters with a dark and enigmatic morality and very diffuse differences between the protagonist and the antagonist. In 1971 came Straw Dogs and The French Connection, the first films that caused controversy due to the increase in violence in the movies.

In the 70s, a group of filmmakers like Francis Ford Coppola, Steven Spielberg or George Lucas emerged who got much more control over their projects than they would have been possible to achieve before. This resulted in some very successful films like The Godfather, Star Wars and Encuentros in the third phase. The success of films such as Star Wars and Tiburón led to the creation of Blockbusters, films with a high budget and huge advertising campaigns.

There was also a great increase in the martial arts genre in the 70s, thanks to Bruce Lee and his renewed Jeet Kune Do style, which made the action scenes more realistic. In this way, the action cinema of Hong Kong began to receive fame with these films that would change to a more comedic tone with Jackie Chan in the 80s after a loss of popularity.

In this era, musical cinema was not very successful in Hollywood; However, the popularity of this genre increased in the Indian cinema, where they created the name Bollywood in view of the growing film industry in Bombay that ended up conquering the cinema of South Asia. Hindu filmmakers created a genre called Masala in which they combined the characteristics of the American musical genre with the ancient Indian theater that conquered Indian cinema during the late 20th century
